CipherCloud Database Gateway was developed to encrypt data-at-rest for cloud-based database systems without needing application, schema or database infrastructure changes that are difficult, expensive or impossible. The company is calling this a first for the industry. The new product supports IaaS, SaaS and PaaS systems including Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) RDS, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) SQL Azure, Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) Database Cloud Service and database.com, as well as existing private cloud and behind-the-wall database installations of Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL.
According to the company, the gateway gives enterprises the ability to secure data stored in database systems easily and eliminates the security and privacy barriers to moving production databases to the cloud. The big difference is cloud database encryption previously required changing infrastructure, relying on a cloud service provider or spending big on custom development, it noted.
"Major enterprises run hundreds, even thousands, of production database systems. The cloud's elastic performance and storage makes it compelling for enterprises to migrate databases to the cloud. But data privacy, residency, security and compliance concerns are holding enterprises back," said Pravin Kothari, CipherCloud founder and CEO, in a prepared statement.
This could provide some differentiation for channel partners working on encryption for customer databases. Add in the content-aware encryption with CipherCloud's cloud-based encryption product, CipherCloud Gateway 3.5, and partners may be able to position a unique security value proposition to their end customers.
CipherCloud lists the key benefits of the new Database Gateway:
- It removes data security, residency, privacy and compliance barriers by making it easier for customers to encrypt IaaS, SaaS and PaaS systems.
- Secure key management -- with keys owned by the enterprise customer -- and standard AES-256 encryption ensures organizations retain control of data that's both at rest in the cloud or in transit.
- Database applications retain native functionality such as search, sort and indexing with CipherCloud's format and operations preserving encryption and tokenization.
- CipherCloud also promises a cost reduction in securing enterprise clouds.
