Spanning Cloud Apps has appointed a new CEO, tapping its chief revenue officer, Jeff Erramouspe, to take over the leadership role from founder Charlie Wood, who has stepped down to become chairman of the board.

A provider of SaaS data protection offerings such as Spanning Backup for Google Apps, Spanning is a growing cloud company that under Wood's direction has grown its customer base to more than 2,500 organizations around the world. Wood also led the financing rounds that ended up raising $9 million in venture capital.

But it looks as though the startup phase of the company has come to an end, and as happens in so many startups, the founder has stepped aside to let someone else take the reins.

Erramouspe joined the company in August 2012. During that time, he has led the Spanning sales and marketing team. According to the company, Erramouspe and his team have tripled the number of paid seats installed since the beginning of 2013. He also signed a distribution agreement with EMC and helped to bring on several high-profile clients including Netflix, Jawbone and Redfin.

Erramouspe has 20 years of marketing and management experience. In his new role, his plan is to expand Spanning's product portfolio from a single product to several while also focusing on additional opportunities.

What this might mean for the company's go-to-market and sales strategy is unknown at this point. One can only speculate at the moment. There was no mention of the channel in the announcement of Erramouspe's promotion, but a company coming out of startup mode that is looking to grow could do so much more easily and swiftly by working with partners in a greater capacity.
