A major contributor to hitting this milestone has been Open-Xchange's willingness to work with partners the world over: In 2011 alone, OX signed up with 15 larger system integrator and hosting provider partners in Europe, North America and Asia to deliver "freemium" webmail to users the world over. In a prepared statement, Open-Xchange CEO Rafael Laguna extolled his company's commitment to the indirect sales channel and revealed some plans for the year ahead:

The decision of Openwave to use Open-Xchange as the foundation for its Rich Mail 4 product gives us access to its 150 million email seats deployed at companies like Time Warner Cable, NTT DoCoMo, UPC and others. We create a complete carrier-grade solution stack with their proven messaging back-ends.“
In other words, Open-Xchange hasn't altered its goal of taking on Microsoft Exchange's market dominance -- but it's going to take the fight to the big guys rather than try to win over enterprises directly.
