Dell is in negotiations to potentially buy Quest Software, a leading provider of Microsoft Office 365 cloud migration services. Although there's no guarantee Dell will actually buy Quest Software, the potential business combination has implications for cloud services providers and cloud integrators.

The vast majority of Dell's business remains PC- and hardware-related. Dell has acquired networking, storage and software companies in recent months. But Dell's most interesting cloud effort today involves Dell Boomi, which includes a range of cloud and SaaS integration services.

Imagine the following scenarios involving Dell and its channel partners leveraging Quest Software's:

  • virtualization tools to help customers migrate from physical servers to virtual servers.

  • IT management and data protection tools to bolster on-premises system performance.

  • migration services, coupled with Dell Boomi, to link on-premises applications with public and private cloud applications.

Dell declined to comment to BloombergBusinessWeek about the alleged Dell-Quest Software acquisition discussions. Also, Quest Software declined to comment about the speculation in an email to Talkin' Cloud's sister site, MSPmentor.
