Inktank, which specializes in providing enterprise-level support for Ceph Distributed Storage System, announced at Dell World 2012 it has joined Dell's (NASDAQ: DELL) Emerging Solutions Ecosystem.

Through the partner ecosystem, Inktank plans to offer Ceph storage software, professional services and support as part of the Dell ecosystem, designed as a partnership program to deliver complementary and interoperable hardware, software and services components via Dell's OpenStack-powered cloud. Ceph, on the other hand, was designed to be a highly scalable and flexible platform that enables object, block and file storage in a universal storage system, enabling enterprises in the cloud.

Using Crowbar software for faster OpenStack deployment, Inktank uses Ceph for a highly scalable and flexible platform to enable object, block and file storage in a single storage system to enable enterprise storage in the cloud. According to Inktank, it has integrated Ceph software into Dell's Crowbar software to enable customers to deploy Ceph storage in conjunction with OpenStack components.

"The industry demand for Ceph has been extraordinary, and our collaboration with Dell enables us to bring Ceph's storage capabilities to more enterprise customers," said Bryan Bogensberger, CEO of Inktank, in a prepared statement.

Customers of Dell's OpenStack-powered cloud services now have available to them Ceph storage and services through Inktank.

As noted on The VAR Guy, Inktank has become a strong company within the open source cloud community, and the partnership between Inktank and Dell represents a certain commitment by the latter to open source cloud.

"As more enterprises move to the cloud, our customers are seeking highly scalable and reliable cloud storage," said John Igoe, executive director of cloud and big data solutions at Dell, in a prepared statement.

As the push toward open source in the channel continues, platforms such as OpenStack and Ceph will continue to play a strong role. The adoption by Dell and its partners will play a critical role in the developing trend of open source cloud.
