Cloud storage and file sharing service Box unveiled new pricing plans for consumers and small businesses yesterday to assist with moving content into the cloud -- but made no mention of new pricing options for channel partners.

The company said it doubled its Personal offering to include 10GB of free storage and launched an all-new Starter plan for small businesses that offers 100GB for $5 per user. Both of these are direct sales moves. While Box made no mention of channel partner changes in yesterday's announcement, the company did beef up its channel efforts earlier this year, claiming 50 reseller partners. These seem to be referral partners. The company's primary channel efforts appear more focused on the developer community where it claimed 17,000 partners as of early 2013.

Box co-founder and CEO Aaron Levie said in yesterday's prepared statement that today's economy is driven by information and collaboration.

"Whether you're a global corporation, a small business, or a freelancer, the key to competing is being able to securely share, manage and access your content anywhere, on any device," he said. "These new plans make the cloud more accessible than ever before."

Box noted that more than 20 million individuals and 180,000 businesses use Box to share and manage their content in the cloud -- with Box users in 97 percent of the Fortune 500.

But while Box put its focus on direct customers this week, competitor Dropbox gained two key partners in the channel.

CharTec, which promotes hardware as a service and managed services provider (MSP) sales training said it will promote the Dropbox service to its partner network, and TechSquad IT said it will provide Dropbox for Business through its technology platform for its small and medium-sized business (SMB) customers.
