Dell has launched a new partner program that will enable its channel partners to sell its public cloud IaaS offering. The new Dell Cloud Partner Program also means the end of Dell's current in-house, multi-tenant public cloud IaaS in the United States.
For the next step in its cloud strategy, Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) is looking to work with partners. The company has launched the Dell Cloud Partner Program to deliver its public cloud IaaS offering through the channel.
Additionally, Dell is also discontinuing sales of its current in-house, multi-tenant public cloud IaaS in the United States "in favor of best-in-class partner offerings." That's good news for the channel, particularly public cloud providers.
At launch, the new program has new partners:
- Joyent, an IaaS provider for real-time web and mobile applications. Joyent's technology is also compatible with Enstratius, a cloud management software and services vendor acquired by Dell earlier this month.
- ScaleMatrix, which offers its TruCore Performance Cloud hosting platform that was designed to provide customers with more control over functionality and performance.
- ZeroLag, which combines VMware (NYSE: VMW)-powered on-demand cloud infrastructure with professional services and custom solutions.
"Many Dell customers plan to expand their use of public cloud, but in order to truly reap the benefits, they want a choice of providers, flexibility and interoperability across platforms and models, the ability to compare cloud economics and workload performance, and a cohesive way to manage all of it," said Nnamdi Orakwue, vice president of Dell Cloud, in a prepared statement. "The partner approach offers increased value to Dell's customers, channel partners and shareholders, as part of our comprehensive cloud strategy to deliver market-leading, end-to-end cloud solutions."
This is just the beginning for the program, though. Dell hinted that additional partners will be signed and the program will eventually expand beyond IaaS offerings. Exactly how Dell might expand the services is unknown, and it looks like the company is going to base any such decisions on customer demand.
The goal is to provide customers with options in the public cloud. According to Dell, it will work with customers to "ensure a smooth transition" to a partner or internal solution.
